The comfort of modern care

What is Varithena?

Varithena is a prescription, non-surgical treatment for varicose veins caused by issues in the great saphenous vein (GSV) system.

This FDA-approved therapy uses a microfoam formulation of polidocanol, a proven sclerosant, to close problematic veins and improve blood flow. It’s especially effective for bulging, twisted, or ropelike veins that are difficult to treat with traditional methods. Varithena is performed in-office, usually taking less than an hour from start to finish.

What makes Varithena unique is its ability to reach veins with complex anatomy. The microfoam fills the vein and causes the vein walls to collapse, stopping the backward blood flow that contributes to leg pain, swelling, heaviness, and visible varicosities. Over time, the treated vein is reabsorbed naturally by the body while blood is redirected to healthier nearby veins.

Relief from the inside out

How Varithena Works

Varithena is administered through a small catheter or direct injection into the vein.

The microfoam spreads evenly throughout the vein, displacing blood and coming into contact with the vein walls. This causes the walls to swell and eventually close off. Once the vein is closed, the unhealthy vein can no longer carry blood in the wrong direction, which relieves the pressure responsible for many of the symptoms associated with varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency.

One of the biggest advantages of Varithena is that it doesn’t require tumescent anesthesia (a numbing solution injected along the vein), and there’s no need for thermal energy. That means less discomfort during the procedure and a lower risk of bruising or nerve injury. Many patients are surprised at how simple the process is—typically walking out shortly after treatment and resuming normal activities the same day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Varithena hurt?

Most patients experience little to no pain during the procedure. There may be mild tenderness, bruising, or swelling afterward, but these typically resolve within a few days.

Many people notice symptom relief within days, while cosmetic improvements become more visible over several weeks. Full results may take a few months as the treated vein is reabsorbed by the body.

In many cases, one treatment is enough to significantly improve symptoms and appearance. However, some patients with extensive vein issues may benefit from additional sessions, which your provider will discuss based on your needs.
