Say goodbye to swelling, hello to relief

What Causes Lymphedema?

Lymphedema occurs when your lymphatic system, a vital part of your immune and waste-clearing network, is unable to properly drain lymph fluid.

This results in a buildup that leads to persistent swelling, most commonly in the arms or legs. There are two main types of lymphedema: primary, which is a genetic condition affecting the development of lymphatic vessels, and secondary, which is far more common and typically results from injury, surgery, cancer treatment, or infection that disrupts the lymphatic flow.

In secondary lymphedema, patients often develop symptoms after surgeries involving lymph node removal or radiation therapy, particularly for cancer. Infections and trauma can also damage lymph vessels, triggering chronic swelling. Over time, the accumulation of lymph fluid can lead to tissue thickening, pain, limited mobility, and an increased risk of infections.

From swelling to strength

How We Treat Lymphedema

At Commonwealth Vein Center, we take a comprehensive, personalized approach to managing lymphedema.

Our first priority is to alleviate swelling and improve your quality of life using non-invasive strategies that support the natural drainage of your lymphatic system. Treatment plans may include manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)—a specialized massage technique that gently encourages lymph flow—along with compression therapy, including the use of custom-fit stockings or bandages to help reduce swelling and prevent fluid buildup.

We also provide customized exercise regimens that promote movement and circulation without overtaxing the affected area. When necessary, referrals to occupational or physical therapy are made to ensure optimal mobility and support. In cases where conservative methods aren’t enough, we may explore surgical options to improve lymphatic drainage or remove excess tissue.
