Leg discoloration isn’t just cosmetic

What Causes Leg Discoloration?

Leg discoloration can stem from a variety of vascular issues, many of which point to poor circulation or blocked blood flow.

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a condition where veins have difficulty sending blood back to the heart, is a common culprit. When this happens, blood can pool in the lower extremities, causing a reddish-brown or purple hue, particularly around the ankles. Similarly, varicose veins and spider veins, which are visible signs of vein dysfunction, can lead to skin color changes due to increased pressure in the affected vessels.

Other causes of leg discoloration include deep vein thrombosis (DVT), peripheral artery disease (PAD), or leg wounds that don’t heal properly. These conditions can reduce oxygen delivery to the tissues, cause inflammation, or result in damage to the blood vessels—all of which can alter skin tone. Left untreated, these underlying issues may lead to ulcers, skin hardening, or permanent pigmentation.

Don’t ignore the color change

How We Treat Leg Discoloration

At Commonwealth Vein Center, we take a comprehensive approach to treating leg discoloration by first identifying its root cause.

Our team begins with a detailed medical history and physical exam, followed by advanced diagnostics like vascular ultrasound and blood tests to pinpoint the issue. Once we understand the origin—whether it’s CVI, PAD, or another vascular disorder—we craft a treatment plan customized to your needs and health history.

Treatment may include lifestyle modifications, such as weight management and exercise, to promote better circulation. Compression stockings can also help move blood more efficiently through the veins. In more advanced cases, minimally invasive procedures like sclerotherapy, ClariVein®, VenaSeal™, or laser vein treatments may be recommended to close faulty veins and reroute blood through healthier ones.

Before & after

Frequently Asked Questions

Is leg discoloration always caused by a vein issue?

Not always, but it often is. Vascular conditions like CVI, PAD, or varicose veins are leading causes. However, trauma, certain medications, or skin conditions can also contribute. A specialist evaluation helps determine the exact cause.

In some mild cases, it might improve with rest or lifestyle changes. But if it’s caused by an underlying vascular condition, it typically won’t resolve without medical treatment and can worsen over time.

Most treatments we offer are minimally invasive with little to no downtime. Patients generally report mild discomfort at most, and many resume normal activities shortly after their procedures.
