A heartbeat away from clarity

What Is an Echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram is a painless, noninvasive imaging test that uses sound waves to create real-time pictures of your heart.

Our skilled vascular and cardiac specialists use this tool to assess how well your heart is functioning. With echocardiography, we can evaluate the size, structure, and movement of the heart’s chambers and valves, helping to detect a wide range of cardiac issues early—before they become more serious. An echocardiogram provides essential insights into your cardiovascular health.

This diagnostic test is performed using an ultrasound device that captures high-resolution images of your beating heart. It can reveal problems such as coronary artery disease, valve dysfunction, previous heart attacks, fluid buildup, infections, or congenital abnormalities. If you’ve already been diagnosed with a heart condition, echocardiograms are also useful for monitoring treatment progress.

How Echocardiograms Work

An echocardiogram works by using high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) that bounce off the heart structures and produce moving images on a screen.

These images allow your provider to see the heart’s chambers, valves, walls, and surrounding structures in real time. The process begins with a technician placing small sensors on your chest to monitor your heart’s electrical activity while you lie comfortably on an exam table. A handheld ultrasound probe, called a transducer, is moved across your chest, sending sound waves through your body. These waves are interpreted by a computer to form visual snapshots of your heart.

Depending on your symptoms and needs, your echocardiogram may include Doppler imaging, which evaluates the flow of blood through the heart and vessels. This is particularly useful in assessing how well the heart is pumping and if any valves are leaking or narrowed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an echocardiogram painful?

No, an echocardiogram is completely painless and noninvasive. You may feel a slight pressure as the technician moves the ultrasound wand across your chest, but the test itself is very comfortable.

Most echocardiograms don’t require special preparation. You can eat, drink, and take your medications as normal unless your provider gives you specific instructions.

Your provider will review your images and may discuss preliminary findings during a follow-up appointment. In many cases, results are available within a few days, depending on the complexity of the test.
