Don’t let a silent clot stop your stride

What Causes Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in one of the deep veins in your body, most commonly in the legs.

These clots can partially or completely block blood flow, leading to swelling, pain, and long-term complications. The most serious risk is that part of the clot could break loose and travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism—a potentially life-threatening event. Prolonged immobility—like long flights, hospitalization, or bed rest—can slow circulation, while surgery or trauma can damage vein walls, and certain medical conditions can increase clotting risk.

Lifestyle and health conditions also play a major role in DVT development. Smoking, obesity, dehydration, pregnancy, and hormonal therapies are all associated with increased risk. Age is another factor—while DVT can affect anyone, it becomes more common as we get older. Individuals with a history of varicose veins, chronic venous insufficiency, or previous DVT episodes are particularly vulnerable.

Strong veins, safer health

How We Treat Deep Vein Thrombosis

At Commonwealth Vein Center, we approach DVT with the urgency and precision it requires.

Our first priority is confirming a diagnosis through advanced imaging tools like vascular ultrasound or venous Doppler studies. These tests help us locate the clot, determine its size, and assess how much it’s affecting blood flow. Once diagnosed, our treatment is tailored to each individual’s condition and health history. The primary goal is to prevent the clot from growing, reduce the risk of pulmonary embolism, and stop new clots from forming.

In more severe or complicated cases, such as those involving extensive clots or compromised circulation, we may recommend more advanced treatments. These could include thrombolytic therapy to dissolve the clot quickly or procedures like catheter-directed thrombolysis or thrombectomy to physically remove the clot. Compression therapy may also be used to prevent post-thrombotic syndrome, a condition that can cause long-term pain, swelling, and skin changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is DVT diagnosed?

We use non-invasive diagnostic imaging such as vascular ultrasound to detect the presence, size, and location of the blood clot.

Yes. Staying active, staying hydrated, wearing compression stockings during long periods of sitting or travel, and managing chronic health conditions can all reduce your risk.

With prompt and appropriate treatment, most DVTs resolve without long-term complications. However, some people may develop post-thrombotic syndrome or have a higher risk of future clots, requiring ongoing care.
