Stronger veins, better days

What Causes Chronic Venous Insufficiency?

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) occurs when the valves in your leg veins become damaged or weakened, leading to poor blood return to the heart.

Instead of flowing upward as it should, blood begins to pool in the legs, creating increased pressure in the veins. Over time, this pressure can stretch the veins and cause symptoms such as swelling, leg heaviness, cramping, aching, and visible skin changes like discoloration or varicose veins. In more advanced cases, venous ulcers may form, especially around the ankles.

Several factors contribute to the development of CVI, including age, genetics, obesity, pregnancy, prolonged sitting or standing, and previous episodes of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). People who have a family history of vein disease or who work in occupations that require long periods of immobility—such as teachers, healthcare professionals, or airline workers—are particularly at risk. Lifestyle choices, such as a sedentary routine or poor dietary habits, can also play a role.

Chronic doesn’t mean untreatable

How We Treat Chronic Venous Insufficiency

At Commonwealth Vein Center, we take a comprehensive and personalized approach to treating CVI.

The first step is an accurate diagnosis, often involving a detailed vein health evaluation and duplex ultrasound imaging to assess the function of the valves in your veins. Once we understand the root cause of your symptoms, we’ll recommend a treatment plan designed to relieve your discomfort and improve circulation. In many cases, conservative treatments like compression therapy, leg elevation, and lifestyle changes can provide significant relief and slow the progression.

For more advanced or persistent cases, we offer minimally invasive procedures that target the underlying vein malfunction. Treatments such as endovenous laser therapy (EVLT), radiofrequency ablation, or ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy work by sealing off the damaged veins, rerouting blood flow through healthier vessels. These outpatient procedures are safe, effective, and require little to no downtime.

Before & after

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the early signs of chronic venous insufficiency?

Common early symptoms include swelling in the lower legs or ankles, a feeling of heaviness, leg cramps, or itching. Skin discoloration or visible varicose veins may follow if left untreated.

While CVI is a chronic condition, it can be effectively managed and its symptoms significantly reduced or eliminated with proper treatment and lifestyle changes.

Most modern CVI treatments are minimally invasive and well-tolerated. Procedures like EVLT or sclerotherapy are performed in-office with little to no downtime and minimal discomfort.
